Is The Google Penguin Mad?

Since the Google Penguin Update that was implemented at the beginning of May thousands of website owners have seen their ranking drop, and no one really seems to understand why. According to the Google bods the new algorithm has been designed to combat spam websites and those with poor quality content but it seems that genuine websites are also being affected by the changes.

So what exactly does Google Penguin look for when deciding which sites to penalise?

In the words of Google; “Sites affected by this change (the recent Penguin Update) might not be easily recognizable as spamming without deep analysis or expertise, but the common thread is that these sites are doing much more than white hat SEO; we believe they are engaging in webspam tactics to manipulate search engine rankings.”

What exactly the ‘webspam tactics’ are has yet to be revealed but it should be noted that this statement doesn’t mention black hat tactics at all. Does this mean therefore that white hat tactics can be taken too far?

Until an all-encompassing definition of ‘spam’ is released by Google it is a bit hit-and-miss regarding what might negatively affect rankings. It also makes you wonder whether there is method in their madness or whether Google have in fact made a mistake on this occasion. Interesting times for SEO Companies ???
