The importance of Twitter and online advertising for the Republican candidates

As the race for who will be the next President of the United States of America starts to rev up a gear, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are among four Republican candidates. With primaries happening in numerous States at the moment, the importance of online advertising and social media is incredibly relevant this time around; especially as a pro-Mitt Romney group spent $600,000 on attacking Santorum.

Online advertising is also being targeted at key States who will soon be running primaries. A site called has been set up to ‘expose’ inaccuracies behind Rick Santorum. On the site is a series of Restore our Future television ads which are currently running in Michigan and Arizona. And, a considerable sum of money has been spent on this. In fact, it was reported that Restore our Future spent $720,000 last week on online advertising. This was used to target Alabama, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Ohio and Tennessee. Newt Gingrich, another Republican candidate but one who is tipped to be unsuccessful, was also targeted too after advertisements ran in his home State of Georgia.

All whilst this is happening, the use of social media is certainly gathering pace. At the time of writing this, the Republican candidates have the exact number of followers on Twitter:

  • Newt Gingrich 1,442,932 followers
  • Mitt Romney 353,244 followers
  • Ron Paul 251,670 followers
  • Rick Santorum 148,635 followers

These current figures don’t take into consideration the number of people who are curious about what the candidates stand for. Links to their articles, interviews and television appearances have been tweeted. There are also occasional tweets about articles which they’ve written. Both their followers and curious voters can easily view this information. It doesn’t matter about the number of followers which a candidate has because the possibility for these articles, which occasionally addresses SEO keywords, is immense.

Companies of any size who are considering about what approach they might take to gain extra income could follow in the same footsteps of the Republican candidates. Wherever they are in the world, companies should consider using social media, such as Twitter, in order to promote their own SEO articles.
